If we want to lower our dependence on foreign oil or gas (any kind of fossil fuel in general) the one absolutely great solution is to build a 100 or so nuclear plants. No alternative technology will produce the amount of energy reliably like nuclear power will. Maybe geothermal technology in the future. Solar and wind are jokes and can only fulfill supplemental roles at best. The problems with nuclear energy generation, primarily with the byproduct of radioactive material, are all but addressed with the new carbon encased pellet technology of the newer reactor designs. Because of the technology involved we can burn the material in question until practically all the fuel is consumed leaving little if any dangerous waste. Supplement local drilling with this technology, build about 100 of these plants, and in a decade we should be really totally independant of most imports. Let the bastards that have been screwing us choke on their own bile.
